announces two postdoctoral fellowships within the project

THE TRADITIONS OF MEDITERRANEAN HUMANISM
AND THE CHALLENGES OF OUR TIMES:
THE FRONTIERS OF HUMANITY

The applicants are expected to:

  • have a PhD degree in the humanities, social sciences or theological studies, defended not earlier than on January 1, 2010 (diploma or an official University certificate confirming the degree is required); the term may be extended for two more years in the cases below:
    • - for male candidates who had taken paternity leave of at least 3 months
    • - for female candidates who gave birth or adopted a child;
  • demonstrate academic achievements (publications, conference papers, organizing scholarly activities);
  • be fluent in both spoken and written English, as well as other languages necessary for doing research in the chosen field of research within the Project.
  • formulate a two-year plan of research work related to the fields of research within the Project (see: http://www.mpd.ibi.uw.edu.pl/?page=program);

The appointment is for 18 months (planned from 1 October 2013 to 31 March 2015; the value of the contract - c. 4500 PLN monthly, after taxes).

STAGE 1: Application

  1. Personal Questionnaire (to download in Word format CLICK HERE)
  2. Letter of intent (in English) including:
    • Motivation for research work within the Project;
    • Motivation for the choice of one of the 13 research fields of the Project;
  3. CV (in English) including: Letter of intent (in English) including:
    • Education and professional career;
    • List of conferences attended (as an organizer; a speaker, or a member of the audience); a list of research programs in which the candidate has taken part;
    • List of publications;
    • List of awards and scholarships;
    • Knowledge of languages (with the specification of passive/active knowledge, as well as the level of competency);
  4. Proof of competency in English and in languages required for the research topic chosen by the candidate (ex: Italian, French, Greek, Russian, Latin, Bulgarian etc.).
  5. Copy of a PhD diploma or of an official certificate issued by the University if a diploma has not been issued yet
  6. Description of research work planned for the next two years (5-10 pages; c. 2000 characters per page)
  7. Three letters of recommendation (letters must be from professors or senior fellows at academic institutions or the equivalent; at least one letter from a professor outside the applicant’s home country is preferred)

    STAGE 2: interview

    Short-listed candidates will be invited to an interview by July 8, 2013. The interview will be conducted either in person at the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw or virtually through videoconferencing system if a candidate is unable to come to Warsaw. The interviews will be held no later than 27 July 2013.

    All interviews will be similarly structured and will deal with the candidate's academic and/or professional career, his or her research interests, the research work plan for the next two years, and languages competency. The interview will be conducted in English.

    Important additional information:

    • The letters of recommendation should be sent by the referees directly to postdoc@al.uw.edu.pl (in PDF format, as attachment named as follows: candidate's surname_rec post doc)
    • List of the recognized documents confirming language competency: http://www.jezyki.pelnomocnik.uw.edu.pl/dane/rozporzadzenie_pk.pdf). If no formal proof of such competency is available, part of the admission interview will be devoted to testing the language competency.

    Key responsibilities for post doc in the Project:

    1. Assisting the PhD students taking part in the Project:
      • consultation with PhD students working in the Project in the same research field;
      • conducting workshops for PhD students on topics of the Project;
      • supporting the Project’s PhD students who are preparing the final versions of their doctoral dissertations (the official role of assistant advisor is possible);
    2. Regular work on his/her own research project in order to increase the research results of the Project (at least 3 peer-reviewed publications during participation in the Project):
      • active participation in all meetings of the Project’s team, contribution to group work;
      • preparing individual and team presentations;
      • public presentations of research results at conferences in Poland and abroad; publication of the results in recognized journals and volumes;
      • popularization of research, especially the achievements of the Project, at public presentations;
      • co-organizing conferences, summer schools and seminars associated with the Project; editorial work;
    3. Teaching courses based on research results for the MA students of the College of Interdepartmental Individual Studies in the Humanities and the Collegium Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw;
    4. Tutorials for BA and MA students of the College of Interdepartmental Individual Studies in the Humanities and the Collegium Artes Liberales.
